First American Edition (Stated "First Edition" on copyright page). Clean unfaded black cloth boards with gold lettering on spine. Slight bumping at base of spine, corners are sharp, no fraying or wear. Binding is tight & square, no cracking. Pages and edges are clean. Clean endpapers (slightest hint of foxing to endpapers); no names, writing or bookplates. 250 pgs. Unfaded dustjacket is not price clipped (4.95 on front inside flap); has very slight edge wear at top and bottom spine edges, short closed tear at top corner of front flap fold (under 1/2"). Highly acclaimed novel written in 1936 when the author was twenty-four years old, but unavailable in England or the United States until the publication of this book in 1960. The setting is a modering residential hotel in London which shelters a group of strange, impassioned people--sensualists, idealists, self-searchers, sex-seekers. They are seen through the eyes of Lawrence Lucifer, the young narrator, who has moved into the hotel for the winter. Approx. 6" x 8". Fiction.
