When Dickens established Household Words in 1850 he inaugurated special Christmas numbers. In each of these he published a special story, which was either outlined by himself or discussed by him. In certain cases, Dickens himself wrote part of the story and The Wreck of the Golden Mary is one of these tales, in which he collaborated with Wilkie Collins.
