The French expedition to Egypt which Bonapart launched in 1798 was one of the most exciting, most harrowing, most futile, and yet most fruitful adventures in modern times, and the three years of occupation left a lasting mark on Egypt. With the armed forces came a group of experts--the so-called Scientific and Artistic Commission--which included some of the most brilliant scholars and scientists of the time. In incredibly adverse circumstances, these men put their talents at the service of the army of occupation, of Egypt, and of knowledge. It was they who discovered the glories of ancient Egypt, who studied for the first time the colossal ruins of Luxor and Karnak as well as the Rosetta Stone, who surveyed the Isthmus of Suez with a view to building a canal, and who collected enough data to fill nine large volumes of text and fourteen volumes of plates. It was because of them that the expedition was something more than a futile and criminal waste of lives. 027980
