Second printing of the first edition in original unclipped dust jacket. Very clean unfaded brown cloth boards with bright gold lettering on spine. No bumping or wear. Binding is tight and square, no cracking; pages and edges are clean. Clean endpapers, beautifully illustrated with map of New York and adjacent cities. 330 pages with index. Book is well illustrated in full color and black and white. Clean dust jacket is unchipped, has price clip at upper corner of front inside flap, some light surface scratches to rear panel. Enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. Mrs. Astor, undisputed queen of anew ayork society in the decades before the First World War, used her prestige to create a social aristocracy in the city. Astor's story, which reads like a novel by Edith Wharton, sheds important new light on the origins, extravagant lifestyle, aqnd social competitiveness of this aristocracy, and it is told here with vigor and elegance by Eric Homberger.
